.....or will it look ok when painted? No room for anything at the sides of the doors. I did initially try keeping the chamfered section but thought it looked slightly worse at the lower height.

You need a plinth at the bottom of the cabinet and a piece of the same taller skirting butted up to it.
Mitted to join the external corner of course.
As it is it will not look ok when painted.
In fact, all joints should be mitred; who's done that?
Not a carpenter I hope.

Thanks. I'm not a carpenter and I always butt joint skirts with a simple profile so I'm not worried about that.

I'm going to fit the plinth after or i'll never get off if I trap it behind the skirting

The doors won't open if the full height skirting is used. I did consider just having nothing and prepping and glossing the plaster but I need something to cover the expansion gap for the flooring.

If that is a door, there should be an end panel/fillet to accommodate the skirting.
Anyhow, if you can't do that, leave it without skirting and finish it as best as you can.
The only skirting that can be cut straight without a mitre is the square profile which is not your case.

Easy to get plinth off , though why would you .?

If those grey things are doors then of course no skirting. Fit the plinth wall to wall and get creative with that little end piece of skirting, mitre cut or round it off by sanding.
There might be a sh*tty looking bit of plaster by the floor that will need tidying up with filler.

That won't look half as bad properly prepped and painted and viewed from normal eye level. I think you're worryng about nothing

Where you have the skirting returning around the corner and under the unit, i'd have mitred a full height section of skirting and then notched it under the cabinet so that the chamfered section of the skirting returned around the corner.

Edit: just seen in your original post that you tried that and thought it looked better as per the photo.
