Hi all, this is my first time posting a question and I would really appreciate any advice you can give.
My bathroom floor is uneven - the previous owners hacked around the floorboards for new heating system and then put hardboard over the top. The hardboard has all broken up. I want a nice level floor for the finished floor covering (probably decent lino). I want to have something like waterproof chip board put down. My builder says it would need to go under the toilet. He also said that toilets never go back on and it would probably leak. This is the bit I am querying with you all, would the old toilet go back in place ok or would I need to get a new toilet? thanks all.

What century is the builder from  come to that what area of the EU

A pan can be re-fitted. If it leaks it's not fitted properly. If in doubt put new seals on it.

As a side note modern push flush toilets complete with cystern and toilet seats are under £100

Just remove the toilet and when it's replaced, use a new pan connector. You can get offset ones up to 40mm offset if your floor level has gone up a bit. I'd put 3/8" ply down, not chipboard. :)
