We are renovating a house and have gone for the eco friendly ground source heat pump. We were told that the thermal store (hot water tank) would be the same size as a domestic fridge freezer- but today we find that it is actually 2500 mm tall. We dont have anywhere with enough clearance to house it so were thinking of building a lean-to shed at the back of the house, but the house windows only allow us to come up to 2000 mm above ground level. So could we drop the floor 600 mm or so below the ground level?

Any thoughts/ suggestions would be very gratefully received.

Yes, so long as you properly tank the walls to avoid water penetration.. probably best done in reinforced concrete or engineering bricks with some waterproof membrane behind..
