Can I read DVD-ROM

I've a got a Dell desktop with a CD drive (marked CD RW), will it read a DVD-ROM (chess game) disk?

I had a look on the box and it says PC DVD-ROM in big letters on the front. On the back under minimum requirements it says "4xCD-ROM or better". Does that mean that it will run in a CD-ROM drive afterall?
