CD in DVD-ROM drive?

Can a DVD-ROM drive read CDs? I've seen a lot of posts in Google that a DVD-ROM drive can't read CDs, is that normal for a PC running Windows XP?

I would expect a dvd drive to read a cd, not vice versa

Why do you ask?
Have you a DVD drive that is not reading a particular CD?
If so, what is showing in My Computer?
If the DVD drive is showing and a CD is in it, double click it and see what shows.

Thanks for the advice. I've getting a basic PC for the little ones mainly to run some CDs, it only comes with a DVD-ROM drive and when I looked in Google it came back with a lot of hits about people complaining that you can't read CDs in the drives. Strange.
