My mate has a Medion PC. the CD/DVD Writer only reads DVD movies but not PC CD Rom disks or Music Cd's (originals). Device manager does not appear to show any problems. Took the drive out of the tower, disassembled it, cleaned the laser and put back in the tower. Still no difference. Could the drive just be shot. I know drives are about £10 to £15 quid these days and will replace it for him if it's knackered. Just though anyone might have any ideas before doing this !

Just replaced one in my sisters PC, for the cost involved, as you said, not worth fault finding.
Trazor is right you need a new drive. There are separate lasers in them for reading DVD's & CD's.
