Can I remove loft stud wall?

Hi,

I was expecting to be able to just rip out the stud work, but it looks pretty original i.e. 1890s. The 3x2 inch rafters sit on upper and lower 7x2 inch purlins for each pitch, where the purlins sit in the brick walls, so I'm hoping they're not structural. Floor approx 8x4 metres.

Think I'll leave the bracing/ceiling joists in anyway, but want to remove the stud walls. Has anyone seen these old attic rooms with original eaves walls?

Looking at that you should be OK to take the studs out. The floor/ceiling joists below seem to be fairly substantial and presumably sit atop a stud wall in the middle

Sounds promising. Thanks. The ceiling joists span from where I'm stood to the eaves. They span from a 9 inch brick load bearing wall that goes right down to the basement, so about 3.6m. However, this load bearing wall is off-centre, so the other span for the ceiling/floor joists is more like 5m. Ever seen or heard of this kind of stud work being original?

Yes. Not that uncommon in Victorian/Edwardian buildings where the atic is a semi-living area. All the houses on my own terrace were like that originally
