Can I use linseed oil as a primer on my window for linseed oil window putty?

I read that an oil-based primer must be used with putty to stop the dry wood sucking out the oil in the putty.

If I just neatly wiped the window frame with a smear of linseed oil, would this work?

Many thanks.

i don't believe so. Putty is rarely used now but when I was taught do do it, we were told that the layer of paint prevents the putty from trying out due to oil absorption by the wood. Once it is dry it cracks and falls out.

putty sticks well to primer. it will not stick to fresh oil.

Why don't you want to use primer?

It's just that I have a full new tub of putty and linseed oil, no primer and was hoping to dodge going out for it!
(Sorry for the delay in replying -- thanks for the advice.)
