I know it's a radiator (before someone says it) but I have not seen this way of doing things before...?

Its just a twin entry valve, very popular in the 70's and still available.

Or were you talking about the disgusting wood cladding next to it

twin entry valve. verycommon. if you pull valve away from rad you will see there is a piece of copper 8/10mm that goes from the valve into the rad by 12 to 18inches. these systems have some draw backs they can be difficult to balance and you cant powerflush them.

Hi all,

Not seen them for years also, wouldn't want to fit them anywayz! As said above, can't powerflush and hard to balance :P

has nobody seen the type that enters the rad in the middle at the bottom, bizzare!!!

lots in west london, housing assoc properties, they are usually one pipe systems. The rad valve has an integral by-pass. Expect to find them on estates that are or where connected to a district boiler. The occupiers find out when changing a rad and fitting normal valves/trv at either end.

can still buy all these strange valves, I,ve got a suppliers catalouge in office, not cheap but can obtain any variation.
