Can this toilet mechanism be replaced with one that overflows into the bowl?

Hi,

Simple question (hopefully) before I call someone out...

A while back our toilet cistern overflowed and we had water all over the floor. Obviously once we heard the water we were able to stop it and have made sure that the water has stopped each time we've flushed it since before leaving the bathroom, which it has. However, I'd prefer that this situation was impossible, particularly since this is the guest bathroom and people other than ourselves will use it.

So I'd like to know if a different mechanism could be fitted that overflows into the toilet bowl rather than relying on the overflow pipe to do its job, which it didn't when called upon. Is there such a mechanism that could be fitted to this toilet?

Thanks,

I Presume the overflow pipe gets overcome with water ? It's that *rap inlet valve that's the problem. You want an old fashioned "ball valve" in there - it's type will depend on whether it's a high or low pressure supply to the cistern.

Yes, the outlet pipe obviously couldn't cope with the flow, plus there's a bad seal around it, which was a minor contributor.

Regardless, valves do leak at times and I'd rather any overflow went into the bowl, as asked...?

Fit a shorter siphon - measure the height to the overflow/cistern rear notch and get a siphon which has a weir lower than that height. https://www.screwfix.com/p/thomas-dudley-ltd-adjustable-siphon-237mm/9756f

The plug the overflow hole - https://www.screwfix.com/p/fluidmaster-blanking-off-plug/65267

Agree with NigeF - get rid of that crappy torbeck type fill valve an fit a decent float-valve

This one if the cistern is mains fed - https://www.screwfix.com/p/pegler-float-valve-part-2/27627
Or tank fed - https://www.screwfix.com/p/pegler-float-valve-part-1/90110
