Candy C4400 dishwasher not moving on to next part of the cyc

Hi there , I have a Candy C4400 dishwasher that if you switch it on to any of the cycles for e.g. the quick rinse cycle it will just sit there making a sucking noise. If you manually turn the control knob it will then start the rinse part of the cycle but won't get any further unless manually moved on by turning the control knob. It does the same thing for all the cycles. It seems to be able to complete all the cycles but only if the control knob is operated manually.

Has anyone got any idea of what the fault might be
