Cannot update.?

Not familiar with windows 8.
Boy has a blank screen apart from message saying windows update must take place and should open PC settings to do so.But cannot open setting from a blank screen?
Is there a keyboard short cut?

Shortcut for settings is 'Windows key + I' IIRC.

Seems to have sorted itself, after a couple of restarts no more messages.
