Or just buy a bigger vent they were often 9"x9" anyway. I am assuming it is just to prevent condensation and not for a open flued appliance.

Yes but the beading is a pain to fit

Can you not just wedge peices of timber around the opening to act like a frame and screw the vent to it and fill the gaps around the vent with filler, fit the timber quite tight and it won't fall out unless you're swinging from it
