Capped electricity prices

You are paying for the vaccines, furloughs, tests and masks and should be agitating against the government rather than discussing which supplier might rip you off the least.

the average went up today

regulator Ofgem has today (Thursday 24 November 2022) announced its quarterly update to the energy price cap for the period 1 January – 31 March 2023.
The price cap is set to rise to an annual level of £4,279 in January 2023, but bill-payers remain protected under the government’s Energy Price Guarantee (EPG).

Do you not not think prices in the UK are a rip-off?
Absolutely I do, if you mean in general. However the high prices are caused by Brexit, Covid, the Ukraine invasion and the Tory mismanagement and nepotism. However the post was a conspiracy theorist suggesting that the government has added to cost of vaccines to the electricity bills (as a surcharge) and there is no evidence to support that.
I don't know where it said that.ff?
You 'liked' a post suggesting that the electricty companies have to give part of the money from the electricy bills to the government to cover 'vaccines, furloughs, tests and masks'. Where is the evidence? And do you believe that the government should not have encouraged vaccines, and where do you think that money should have come from?

I have a family friend a few streets away with British Gas as their provider and they are paying some 5p less for the capped tariff. How is it possible the capped tariffs can be different across providers for the same area?
Well, for a start, a cap is a cap - i.e. the maximum permissible price. There's absolutely nothing stopping any provider charging less than the 'cap' if they so wish - although I must say that I was not aware that any were doing that.

Kind Regards, John

@EFLImpudence Didn't realise you were an anti-vaxxer. Disappointing.

I'm a bit confused. Whilst I would also regard it as disappointing if EFLI were an "antivaxxer", I see nothing in his having 'liked' the post in question that suggests that he is (an "ant-vaxxer"). What am I missing?

He 'liked' a post suggesting that the government should not have been spending money on vaccines. Maybe he liked it for other reasons, but given that I may well owe my continuing existence to the Covid vaccines, I am reluctant to support conspiracy theorists who spend their time denying the benefits of vaccines.

I have to say that I didn't read the post as suggesting that.

I took it to be saying that the government had paid for "vaccines, furloughs, tests and masks" (and the list could have been much longer), so any complaints about any of that should be directed at the government.

... and I'm not sure why you singled out EFLI's 'liking' as indicating he was an 'anti-vaxxer', rather than an 'anti-furlougher', 'anti-tester' or 'anti-masker'?

The bottom line is that I personally feel that you probably very much 'over-interpreted' (and 'selectively over-interpreted') EFLI's 'like'.

In case I haven't said it to you before, Happy New Year!

Kind Regards, John

To be fair, I suppose I should admit that, having said all that, we have yet to see an explicit denial from EFLI that he is an "anti-vaxxer", so I suppose you might possibly be right in your interpretation!

Why does it matter to you so much?

Can one be an "anti-vaxxer" regarding something that is not actually a vaccine.

Why does it matter to you so much?
Is that directed to me? If so, it doesn't matter to me whether or not you are an "anti-vaxxer" (since some such people clearly exist, so there's no reason why you couldn't be one of them), but it does 'matter' a bit to me to see you (or anyone) being 'accused' of something without what I regard as 'good reason'.

I think you probably need to clarify that a bit (at least, if you want me to understand it :-)).

Can we make a 2023 DIYNot resolution to try not turn every discussion into an antivax, covid denying, brexit argument?

I noticed local garage petrol prices are down, hopefully gas / electric prices will follow.
