Just bought a used car from a friend. I realise road tax cannot be transferred with the car, and the previous owner has reclaimed the tax from beginning of next month. What I'm not sure about is whether it's considered taxed till the end of this month, or do I need (strictly speaking!) to tax it right away.
Grateful for any comments

You need to tax it right away. Your friend could have not sold it to you, but let you 'borrow' it until the end of the month, provided the insurance cover supported that. Then transferred ownership at the month end. Basically DVLA get paid twice, for the same month, when a car is sold.

Thanks Harry, I suspected that might be the case.

a good move is to park it on your drive, or the buyer's drive on the 30th, and declare it SORN

or the buyer's drive

then the new buyer can tax it from 1st of following month

so no overlap.
