Car Turning Space needed

I recently posted an enquiry re the above. Since then I have come accross the following "take a piece of string 17 ft long, attach one end in the ground and describe an arc with the other end" this should show a comfortable turning circle for most cars. Have I read this correctly please.

Depends on the car and whether there are any walls or fences etc bounding the 'circle'. For instance I have a Mondeo which according to the handbook (never measured it) has a turning circle between kerbs of 11.8 metres (somewhat more between walls) so would need a bit of shuffling.

Why not mark out a chalk line copy in a car park or wherever and try it in the space?

The chalk sounds like a good idea, is it legal ? I could post the wife as a look-out for traffic wardens I suppose !!

My first thought was who cares, closely followed by 'in this day and age your probably right to wonder'

How about driving a circle within the markings of a couple of bays and taking a measurement afterwards....

Try driving around / between a few carefully positioned road cones / cardboard boxes / shopping trolleys set out to mimic the size and shape of the driveway.

The path described by the inner rear wheel may turn out to be more significant than the path of the outer front corner of the car.
