Hi
I currently have a marble surround that has been in place since the property was built in 1890. There is no insert although it looks like there may have been one at some point.

I want to install a cast iron insert but I am struggling to work out how to fit/secure it. The marble surround is flush to the opening so there is no lip or anything to butt it up against.

I have also read that you should secure it with high gauge wire?

Would I also need to backfill?

I am assuming this is done via the hole in the insert where the smoke goes up?

I have been quoted £500 to have it done by a fireplace expert but would rather do it myself.

Any help really appreciated

No takers so far so I will try and kick off.

The information is too vague to fully understand the problem. If you can, take a photo of the fireplace opening and upload it here.

Give some dimensions of the opening.

Tell us exactly what make and model of insert you are thinking of.

That way informed advice can be given, otherwise everyone will just be guessing and wary of offering advice.

Cheers
