Our cast iron soil branch is leaking, on closer inspection it seems the putty in the joint has crumbeld out.

Is this just regular glazing putty they used to use?

How do the pro's mend these leaking joints?

clean the old joint out, twist and fit some rope then use either putty or plumbers mait, which is similar to putty but stays more flexible

They used to use caulked gaskin and lead ;) Maybe the putty is a previous repair. You can tighten the joint with a caulking iron and a club hammer if it has indeed been leaded. -Got the T Shirt for that one
