Cat poo on carpet

We have been away for a 2 week holiday and the neighbour kindly offered to feed the cat. Unfortunately he didn't let the cat out enough and she pooed on carpet 4 times behind the television. After cleaning up the mess we have 2 problems - how do we get rid of the smell, and how do we stop the cat going back to the same spot to 'do her business', as they often do. Any help would be appreciated.

The only thing I can think of for the smell is to make sure you've washed it all away. As for her going back there, keep a water pistol to hand.

Thanks for feed back - we cleaned the carpet thorughly and the smell was still unbearable. So I have cut that piece of the (new) carpet out and will replace.
