Catch on UPVC door

The latch on one of my UPVC door is going down when you pull the handle but not if the catch hits latch

It is a latch what you can screw off. It is in a rental property and when I have been there once I have seen the tenants little daughter taking screw out latch.

Is there a spring behind these latches what might of gone missing or might it just need oiling ?
