Internal Door Latches

I have a problem whereby my internal door handles will not remain fixed to the door, the screws keep pulling out.

As I understand it, I need to put a through bolt through the door to keep it fixed in place. The door handles I have don’t match the existing latches so the hole for the bolt doesn't line up.

I need to get new latches but the trouble is, the only new latches I can find look like this:

Whereas the existing latches look like this:

So, I have a massive hole for a much smaller latch. Does anyone know where I can get new larger latch or if its possible to make the smaller one fit?

can't see a pic of your existing handles or latches. Please try again with pics.
'mmmm, a mortice latch case. Not often used now, and looks an uncommon size. Have a look on IronmongeryDirect for example If you want to use the same spindle-hole, you will need to know the exact distance between the centre of the spindle hole and the fore-end. The one shown is pierced to accept screws for modern knobs or handle roses, your old ones may not fit, though.

Alternatively you could use a handle on a long backplate, something like}&fh_start_index=0

If the house is of an older style, you could use a finger-plate to hide the old hole, and use a different size of latch.

Thanks JohnD, that first link looks exactly like what I'm looking for, I just didn’t know what they were called so couldn’t search for it.
