I am just about to replace the patio doors in the rear of the house and I am 99.9% sure the metal strip I can see above the frame is a Catnic Lintel. How do you confirm this. The house is only 12 years old?

Either way it will certainly be some kind of lintel, especially if its a new house.
Patio doors are rubbish at holding up weight so if there wasn't a lintel there it would have squashed your doors by now.
