i have had many companies telling me i cant have it, my house is an ex - council and has a steel girder frame shell, any work done could rot the frames, does any one know of an alternative method of insulation, i ain't got a clue

It's possible to have a hard foam board applied to the outside of your house and rendered over, seen it in France and when I enquired on here, it is also done in UK. Or you could dryline the inside with insulating bats and redecorate every room. I suppose it depends if the outside of your house needs painting, or the inside!
I've been looking into insulation recently and found this website, www.simplifyDIY.com, that has loads of info on it.
JohnD is right...you can have insulation added to the outside of your exterior wall, which is then rendered over.
