when i pop a cdr into my laptop drive a box pops up and asks for a disc that uses a format that windows recognises, does anyone know why this happens?
laptop is running vista, discs are datasafe branded cdrs

Firstly what OS are you using?

Second try putting a normal CD or DVD in the drive, do they work?

I had a similar problem a while ago and what it was that it played/burned cd's but not dvds, turned out that the dvd portion on the drive was busted. If it plays CDs then it cant be that.

My advice is to buy a different brand of cdr and see if they work, sometimes you just get a duff batch, if thats the case money back please.

The it sounds like something is wrong with the drive, have you tried dvd-r's dvd and cd RW's? Another brand of CDR. You need to trouble shoot it.

As a last resort you could try updating the firmware.
