Ceiling issue

I live in a 1950s house and teh ceiling in one of teh bedrooms has been painted several times. Today large parts of teh paint have flaked off when decorating, you can put a scrapper under amd it’s peeling off like wallpaper. Some parts though are stuck solidly, I don’t want an uneven finish so apart from sanding or chipping away with a scrapper is there an easier way to get this off.

Some things to try.
Duck tape and pull.
Wallpaper scraper.
Wood chisel.
Glass scraper.

When you get the hang of scraping it's not difficult. I say... Maybe some do have trouble..
It's a dark art.
My mate ended up with a bad arm after a few minutes so go easy.

Thank you Ibe got most of it off but there are some really bad patches where it seem impossible to shift but I’ll persevere

That's the problem.
Those patches you can't shift will bubble the moment you paint or skim.
I used to chip surface back to good and seal and skim.
That way the skim can grip something solid

You might have to resort to a steam stripper. I used one on all my ceilings: each and every one of them had been papered with woodchip and were rough as Hell underneath so that when I stripped the paper by hand, half the plaster came off and half didn't. I removed as much furniture from the rooms as I could, suffered the steam and the effort of holding the steamer on the ceiling for many hours but it worked and I was able to fill in the few remaining imperfections and finish with a textured paper.

Glass scraper has worked for me, where Ive been in similar situation!
