Hi,

I am looking for a bit of advice I have purchased a metal light fitting. After having a look inside the ceiling rose I noticed there was no earth. A bit further investigating I had a look at the cable the and noticed it is a twin and Earth cable.

Can I use the earth off this cable on the new fitting? I have had a look at the switch which is brass this is earthed any help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Are you trying to say the earth wire in the cable at the ceiling rose has been cut out?

If so, you need to find it, then do some simple tests to see if it actually is connected to earth.

Thanks for the reply Yeah it has been cut
What test will I have to carry out to see if it is connected?

With a tester with a low-ohm range, you need to verify that there is a low resistance path from the earth conductor in the end of the cable back to the earth bar in the consumer unit.

You also need to do the same at switches if you have, or want to fit, metal ones.

The problem is that you are trusting your life to the integrity of the earth - do you really want to effectively trust the kind of brain-dead ignoramus who would cut the earth conductor back not to have been a total f***wit in other places too?

Thanks for this will do the tests
Don't want to risk my life after some of the discoveries I have found in this house I think it's for the better!!
