Ceiling repair

Is it a ceiling board or lathe and plaster.
If it's a board the best solution would be to screw the board back up tight, nearly always cracks appear on the butted ends of plasterboards and there should be a timber joist at this point.
Then remove/sand away any loose paint/plaster, this should help decide whether the joint needs to be taped and filled out or whether it can be filled without the means of joint/repair tape. I would nearly always apply the tape though, belt/braces. By racking back the joint and filling correctly.
The crack could be down to movement from above if there is a loft space or rooms that are used and have plenty of foot traffic or excessive movement, or may have just sagged over time if not been fitted correctly.
The other cause is leaks, but you would notice this by either evidences of damp patches or dripping water or a brown water mark around the crack.
