central heating banging noise

i have a gas fired back boiler and when i switch the heating or hot water on i get banging in the pipes some quite loud any idieas please
 
You cannot be sure that the opump is working just by listening to it!

Its probable that the F&E tank is empty but if not then the feed pipe will be blocked where it meets the heating system pipes.

thanks for that tony but i presume pump is working when rads get hot what is f&e tank please
