Hi all, my central heating has developed an intermittent fault.

It appears that the central heating side of the system stops working for a few hours, then will work fine for a while, just enough to get the radiators hot and then stop working again.

I have checked the programmer and room thermostat but everything appears correct. I have even replaced the room thermostat hoping that was the problem but still the same. The thermostat clicks when sending its instructions but the boiler dosn't kick in.

The hot water is fine, the boiler fires up when it should

I believe i have an open system, there is a large cold water tank in the attic along with a small expansion tank for the central heating, a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard and an old fashioned Ideal Classic boiler in the kitchen. I know the boiler is probably very inefficient but we cannot afford the outlay of a new boiler and our credit history is probably not good enough to get finance for one.

The PCB was replaced in the boiler about three/four years ago and the 3 port valve was replaced maybe five/six years ago.

Any body have an idea what the problem could be and what it is likely to cost to sort it?

Quite a few possibilities but first check would be the three-port valve
