Hello,

my mothers central heating has shut down, well not completely shut basically what's happened is the bathroom radiator rusted through and sprung a leak radiator was only about 1-2 years old, now as its close to xmas don't really want to splash out for a new boiler, she has the old water cylinder type boiler, just wonder would it be a good idea to replace all the radiators and then have the whole system completely power flushed ? should this keep it running for a few years ?

The old water cylinder type, not that that matters too much as the problems the bathroom rad. New rad, add some inhibitor and sort next year then.

It needs water treatment as well as curing the fault that I suspect exists.

Otherwise the rads will rust through one by one!

and what entails with the water treatment what is required and how is it done and at what cost, the radiators are old one bedroom rad also went, so got 4 to replace not good at all but as i said maybe a good idea to fit new rads and get it flushed through.

You must have a serious underlying problem for that many radiators to pinhole. Don't just book a powerflush, ask for a diagnosis of why it's happening.

I once had a system with a cold feed and open vent in the wrong place that was pumping over the vent pipe into the header tank any time the pump was running. This was causing air to be introduced into the system almost constantly. I was the first one to actually diagnose the fault when the fourth radiator pinholed in about a year. Seemingly this had been happening for even longer than that, customer estimated around 10 years when the boiler was fitted because he was always having to bleed radiators on a weekly basis!
