In the last week or so I noticed that when the central heating was on the pressure of my boiler went up above 3bar and started to leak. I knocked the heating off and let it settle back down again, it continued to do this even with just over 0.5bar pressure when cold.

A friend of mine had a look and said he thought the radiator control dial was not doing it's job, so I bought a new potentiometer and harness. He fitted this today for me but it made no difference, the heating just stayed on and the pressure continued to rise regardless of whether the radiator dial set to 1 or 6.

Anyone got any ideas what it might be? I've spent a good while 'Googling' and couldn't find anything.

Thanks.

Expansion vessel flat or dead caused the prv to engage.
Crap in your system caused the prv to fail.

Check exp vessel
Clean system
Replace prv

And start saving for a new boiler, it is on the way out.

Thanks for the reply.

I am a novice at best with this, is it wise for me to attempt these things?

Quite a bold statement, as all it needs is the pre-charge done (or an external vessel fitted) and a repair on the PRV (or a new one at about 8 quid).

Why is the boiler "on it's way out out"? If your website is yours, your a hypocrite.

Mr W.

Please could you give me a bit more info on how I would do what you have said?

Thanks in advance.

I think Ben may have misread.
Pressure doesn't make the boiler stay ON.
Are the rads getting hot or is it just the boiler?

Common fault is the tap hot water flow switch sticking on. Boiler sits there and - boils. WHich makes the pressure rise, and the relief valve leak...
Do you have to use the reset button underneath on the right?

Take the front cover off the boiler. (Screw just over the top, in the middle, has to be loosened. Pull cover forward and lift.
Then you'll see half a dozen red LEDs on the panel on the right. One of them is for hot water demand. See if it's on when there's no tap running.

If it is, you need a new flow switch. And you won't believe how hard they can be to change.

Ideal Responses - most of them have died by now, though mostly the bigger ones.
