My inherited CH system (about 20 years old) has a single motorised valve so hot water is always on. Was this for simplicity, cheapness or just a limitation of programmers at that time (which I've now replaced)??

Thanks for that. Have to say the Honeywell motorised valve has been very reliable (just easy-fit new motor every 5 years or so) so don't think an extra valve would be such a big risk

Cheapness, simplicity and reliability.

Ignore the reliability !

The installers used to fit the minimum required to make it work!

In fact they still do!

Half the new boilers I see have no room stat and about a third have no TRVs either!
