I have recently moved into a new house. When i opened the airing cupboard board where the cylinder lives i noticed the lever at the bottom was set to flushing rather than normal use. A hair band had been used to keep the lever set to flushing.

The heating woks this way and the water gets hot.

however if you put the lever to normal use nothing works at all.

also the thermostat has no effect when on flushing setting.

And in addition to this when you turn on the emmersion switch i the kitchen it trips the main fuse!!

help

I think you have 2 problems. The immersion element or thermostat has gone. Get a new immersion heater fitted or at least get it checked over by an electrician. I tak it that by main fuse you mean the RCD which is also the main on/off switch?

I do not know what you mean by a flushing setting. Any chance of a pic?

he means the valve manual lever is has been held open by the band.

the motor is probably goosed and some lazy sod couldnt be bothered to replace it

Thanks for the responses

nickos is right i mean the manual valve lever.
