Central heating programmer replacing Potterton EP 2002

Hi, new boy on here, I'm looking to replace this with a Salus EP210, I'm feeling fairly confident about changing the back plate and wiring, except for the red wires of the 5 terminal, realise they are not required on most programmers now, but what happens to them? Are they left joined together behind the back plate?

Why not fit a direct replacement onto the same back plate :sneaky:

I dislike the sliders, they seem flimsy and prone to failure (and cost twice as much)! Hope you're somewhere warm on holiday
 
There have been quite a few threads on here where folks have changed a Potterton EP for another programmer. If you use the forum search facility and type in Potterton EP, you will find them.
