Lets say that you have two zones in your home to keep it simple. The upstairs and the downstairs.

Downstairs you only want to have the heating on at 6-8am on a morning for getting up and say 6-8pm on an evening arriving home.

Upstairs you want to ensure that the room stays at 23oC from 10pm until 6am.

With the above basic example can somebody explain how it works?

I understand that the thermostat will kick in for your downstairs zone at the specified times but how do you ensure that the upstairs is not on at the same time? How does the CH not heat upstairs whilst heating downstairs?

You have a seperate timed stat upstairs and downstairs, and motorised valves on your heating pipes to prevent hot water flow to the areas that shuld be off.

However in your example, when down stairs is heating, there more than likley will be heat transfer through the ceilings and air movement to upstairs causing is to heat a bit. But the upstairs stat will watch the central upstairs temp and ensure no actual heating is turned on upstairs.
