Big problem with my catering vans electrical supply,my fridges d'ont like the supply from my 6kva honda generator which i have found out it is centre tapped, can this be changed in any way.KIND REGARDS DAVID.
What is the output voltage of the generator ?
Does it have voltage regulation ?
Is it adequately sized to cope with the compressors kicking in ie how many fridges ?
What make is the generator / alternator, assuming it is a Honda Engine?
Does the manufacturer have a helpline that you can phone?
I'm wondering if it is floating as opposed to a centre tap supply as you don't really have an earth, especially if it is on wheels unless you drive a spike in the ground and earth it properly.
If you use a multimeter set to ohms with the generator switched off, measure the resistance between the earth pin (at 6 oclock) and the other two live pins in turn - post back the result.
I have come across generators with a 55 - 0 - 165 tapping before where they are designed for duel voltage and the only real way to change them is to use an isolation transformer as used with narrow boat supplies.
However likely you can buy another generator for the cost of the transformer.
The other option is to dismantle the generator and disconnect the earth connection inside the generator.
Personally I feel these generators are dangerous and the one I was involved with was fixed to the 110 volt output only. It was cheaper to buy a 110 to 230 volt transformer than a 230 volt to 230 volt isolation transformer.
