Ceramic Tiling

HELP!! I've had to remove a few tiles I had already mortared down (to re-cut)and am finding it very difficult to remove the old mortar. I want to make sure when I reset the tiles it is level with the others. Anyone know a good way to remove the old mortar? I've tried a chisel and hammer and it just doesn't seem to work.
