managed most of them round the house.

the one in the kitchen :

it has 3 red wires and an earth cable.

(it has an old switch I guess at present)

earth to the back of the metal box.

1 red at the top of the switch

2 at the bottom nipped together.

black wires are capped off - why is this ?

also the screws that come with the new chrome swich are too short for the old bracket.

is there a standard size that fit ? I did buy some new ones but are slighty to `wide` now after getting the correct length !

your 2 reds will go in to L1/COM and the other cable on its own will go in to L2 ( switch wire ).
The blacks are neutrals and will remain jointed in your connector, tho its probably better to put them in a bit of connector block if they're just in one of those screw caps.
The longer screws your probably looking for are M5 unless its a really old backbox, you'll get them at your local electrical shop, BnQ wickes etc.

Cheers
