Chasing Machines

I bought a "disposable" one ( cheap and nasty ) specifically for the re-wire of a stone built cottage,. The clean cuts and speed of cutting made it worth while in the vacant house. The drawback is the huge amount of dust produced which I think would make it not sensible in a an occupied house.

As mentioned, it's the volume of dust that kills off any advantage over an SDC chasing bit, an SDS flat chisel or the old fashioned club hammer and a bolster.

High end one's can have water spray attachments to reduce the dust and allow for cutting engineering standard hard faces.

If your working on empty sites fine, but I can asure you that sealing off rooms with plastic sheeting and duct tape doesn't work.

Normal mess level is akin to this->

ive got the metabo with the extraction hoover.

its pukka mate had it for five years now and providing you use good blades it will last forever.
like i said i invested in one years ago.bought a decent core drill also.

i can completely chase out a decent sized kitchen with say,6 double sockets, five or six spurs and core a six inch hole or four inch for cooker hood .takes less than 2 hours and the lack of vibration actually leaves me with some strength in my hands.
its the lack of effort needed to do this work thats the real bonus.
cant think of any cons.

btw nine times out of ten the houses are occupied and i dont get complaints about dust.it is however attached to a 250 quid extraction hoover.

i will never again use a hammer and bolster, completely pointless.saves the spreaders time because you get nice clean cuts so it takes them less time to bond up,meaning you can charge a little more to offset the cost of purchase???

lokks so much more professional too when you walk off site after the first fix

So you can do a day's work in 2 hours work. This must also be good for bottom line too? Probably pay for the machine many times over if you do enough chasing work?

(Is this why your at home posting rather than getting repetative strain injury at work!)

it does sound like an exageration mate but its not,of course sometimes i will go over two hours.

im not being rude to you in any way mate, but the idea of taking all day to chase out a kitchen i now find ridiculous.i completely carcass them in a day no problem and my standards are high

lol mate!

i did two this week on my own and ive second fixed one already, you wait till your builder asks when he can bring the spreaders in and you say "about four mate"

just using a kango bit is so old fashioned imo it mullahs the wallsvibes your arms and hands to pieces.if your employed does your boss not have a duty of care towards this?

I'm not an electrician yet. So I have not had enough practise chasing so I'm pretty slow at moment.

I was chewing the cud whether it's a good purchase or not as I was going through how much kit (and hence) money I need to get myself up and running after I'm qualified.

any links to the wonder machine?

I have some chasing to do next year... whilst not enough to justify an expensive purchase like this, I get good rates on some pro hire equipment.... wanna know what to ask for ( they prob wont have it though :-( )

Hello,
I dont know if its because I am stuck in my ways, but the most expensive chasing machine was a proper disappointment. Loads of dust , in practice it was just a gloryfied tool that I get away with by using my 4" grinder.
The steak hammer chisels are fine but with all these tools you must get the right 'bit' for the surface you need chasing.
With a trusty hammer and bolster you dont have any of the time consuming aspects of hiring and returning 'bits' that simply don't do the job.

My local Hirer won't recommend/ assure me of any 'box cutter' for anything harder than breeze.
Give me a club hammer and a sharp bolster anytime

wall chaser here

hammer and bolster still good but i can do in less than five minutes what takes an hour with h and b.took me a while to come round,i said the same when my mate got one,i liked doing it that way.

until i saw how much work he got done, bought one straight away.i do use it an awful lot though.average 3 bed house, less than half a day to chase the lot.cant argue with that.
still got loads of energy left too, and my hands and arms dont ache

link dont work?
its on the metabo website

edward current, you need to have the extraction hoover.without that then agreed, you wont be able to see across the room after one chase

Links that work

2) http://www.metabo.co.uk/metabo/handgefuehrte/uk/en/produkte/wallchasers/

you got a few spaces missing :-)

Thanks for the links.. now i know what to look for when I visit the hire place. With my small number of chases needed, H & B is the only method "economically justifyable" but if I can hire one of these babies....

thanks again
