I emailed Opella (makers of the Torbeck) over the bank hol weekend. On Tuesday, I got a reply saying they had developed an anti-hammer part and offering to send me a prototype.
It arrived this morning and I hope to fit it later.

I fitted the new part, and the drumming/chattering/hammering has stopped.
I don't know for sure how it works, but it replaces the original thick end cap with a two-part cap, where the parts snap together. Each has a small hole for the pin that the float arm presses on.
My guess is that the small space between the two caps acts an an expansion chamber,or has enough elasticity to absorb the pressure pulses,or maybe it just changes the natural vibration frequency.
Anyway, I am pleased with Opella's response,and remain happy with my Torbecks.
