We want to open up and use our old coal fire, stuck a few smoke bombs (if incorrect name sorry) and nothing seems to have leaked through the walls etc. The thing is i`ve been advised to have a chimney/flue liner and the ones i`ve seen work out at £16 per metre. Is it advisable to have these fitted if there`s no apparent leaks or not, plus is there a cheaper? alternative. Many thanks for any responses

I think it might have been a case of prevention and all that. The properties over 400 year old and as i`ve mentioned nothing seemed to leak through the wall after the smoke bomb was used, just thought the chimney bloke was tryna cover his own back by advising use to have it lined. But at the time i did mention that we might want to have a wood burner instead of a regular coal fire. But we think we`ll opt for a coal fire(if that makes sense)

eeeeeeeeekkk does that mean double the cost "kevplumb", if there`s no leaks should i opt for a liner or not?

Woodburning stove= liner. ...open fire= no liner needed, just keep the chimney swept regularly :)

Cheers Nige F only thing is there`s no apparent leaks (yet) plus the things not been used in donkeys years so only problem is if we have it swept we might dislodge or disturb any mortar etc, but i`ll give it a go and see how I go on. Many thanks
