Hi,
I am having the ground floor chimney removed and the 1st floor chimney removed from out victorian property. The engineer has had a look and is looking at a steel beam in the ceiling of the 1st floor were the chimney is removed. I have asked him about gallow brackets as an alternative to the steel beam and i get the impression he is just not a fan of them as apposed to not suitable, as he says they are only as strong as the wall they are bolted to. Does anyone know if gallow brackets are still used for such a purpose, i am not saying that he is not right but just think they may be an aletrnative.
Thanks

They are still accepted in some cases, usually only suitable for small protrusions in good cament bonded masonry.

We never use them; only ever use steelwork spanning between walls.
