Morning all,

Bought my house a few years ago and have been doing it up bit by bit. Now on to the dining room and have come across a problem.

Have ripped the old plasterboard down on the ceiling as it was in poor condition and have noticed that part of the old stack doesn't appear to be supported. The chimney stack is still in place and the rest of it in the above bedroom is still in place.

My thoughts are that I need to get some gallows brackets and a lintel under it. Problem is that the brickwork hasn't been cut level so looks like that needs addressing before the brackets and lintel can be offered up.

Any comments and advice welcome.

Thanks,
Steve

Have you considered removing the chimney breast in the bedroom - removing it up into the loft, and supporting it up there?
Doing that would, of course, give you extra space in the bedroom.

Is there a stone or concrete hearth in the bedroom above?
From the pics there's no indications of movement.

Thanks for responding vinn.

Unfortunately I've done up the bedroom above and insulated internally in there so am leaving that alone.

There's no hearth up there so just this small flue part of the stack.

It's not very big and corbelling is probably holding it but I just think it should be supported better, even though it's not a whole breast as such.

Got some 300mm gallows being delivered on Monday so think that's the route I'll go.
