chimney terror!

Hiya,

we've uncovered a bit of a nightmare behind the plaster work on our chimney in the downstairs back room.

we would like to make this a nice builders opening but are really worried about the work which has been done before by the previous occupier.

The original brick work has been hacked about somewhat, especially at the base. The stuff that has been fillied in has not been tied in very well and we have two lintels, one arched bit of metal and one thick flat bit of metal. There is no movement in any of the brickwork above.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about.

If you want some help about your new "builders opening" I suggest you draw the opening on the top picture and tell us what you are then going to put in it. Don't let any part of the existing brickwork influence you.
