Have just moved into rented chalet bungalow and it has a brick vent in the chimney in the bedroom. Is this safe to sleep in as the log burner is used from time to time? Also do all staircases have to have hand rail by law?
Approved Document K states that flights should have a handrail on at least one side if they are less than one metre wide and on both sides if they are wider than one metre. There is no need for handrails beside the bottom two steps of a stairway. Minimum domestic handrail heights of 900mm for both stairs and landings, public handrail heights should be a minimum of 900mm on stairs and 1100mm on landings.
Regarding the chimney, I would think the downstairs fireplaces should be flued independantly of the upstairs. Obviously the flue for the woodburner is open to allow the smoke to escape, but if the upstairs fireplace has been blocked up then a vent is provided to prevent damp issues. If there is no smell of smoke in that room then it should be ok IMO.
Sorry hugh, there isn't a fireplace in the bedroom, it is just brickwork of chimney from the log burner. We don't light fire often and haven't smelt smoke but how can I confirm its safe? As I want to use this room for my son but don't want him to be at any risk. Any tests I can do?
