Please help.
I have a very old cottage that has been renovated , central heating , etc, however i have an open fire place which i want to put a 7kw woodburner in , chimney very good condition about a foot square all the way from fireplace to stack , please do you think a metal flu will be needed , or can i do without one.
Thank you Cerith

You would need to get someone in to inspect it.

I know it's dearer than just doing it yourself, but it is alot safer as you wouldn't know if it could be spilling.

The flexible flues are not that expensive to buy per metre. See link: The age of your property and state of 'parging' within the chimney need most consideration.

Cost it out and see if you can do it yourself.
Main problem being access to the top of the chimney and the making of the register plate (to fit the fireplace and making suitable holes for stove pipe and sweeping)

I might be talking rubbish here, but when lighting wood burner when the stove pipe passes through register plate into 'open' chimney, it takes a bit of time for the heat to flow up and out of the top, causing (sometimes) bad back flow  ie smoke comes back into the room.

Great topic and lots of views, if you start to read into it to much it can frighten you from doing anything. Building Control. HEATAS etc etc. Think how the guys in the wigwam coped, they just cut an opening in the top of the tent :D
