Chimny breast

I have a chimney breast which is only 3" in depth, therefore this limits what I can do with it. It looks like it was built like this for some reason. Do you guys think its best to keep it original although looks a bit strange or have it opened up, flue liner and all inserted and therefore extended the depth which will enable shelves installed on each side. The one in the rear room and neighbours is a full depth breast.
