Hi all,

I need to clear a load of old bushes/trees from the back garden and I'm going to rent a chipper/shredder to do it. The chippings will be buried in part of the garden that is currently too low.

However, I have no idea what the difference between a chipper and a shredder is and which is more suitable for my task.

Any clues??

shredder up to 4 inches thick., chipper beyond that.

So it's a shredder then, since anything bigger than 1 inch can be cut into 9 inch lengths and used for indoor fires, and if you haven't got a fire, someone else will be glad of it.

Cut all sideshoots of all branches, and cut the side shoots off these sideshoots using some decent loppers or a very shap bill hook. I prefer a spar hook as it's smaller. Then cut the relatively straight pieces up into 9" lengths.

I cut the smaller branches similarly too, as they're used for kindling. This system gets some use out of all these bits of wood which you are otherwise going to use a lot of power to chip. Then you can use the ash on the garden.

When they rot down your garden will still at a similar height to what it is prior to you burying the chippings.
