Choosing H/W cylinder size

and also have it with priority over the central heating, so the whole output of the boiler can be used to heat the cylinder.
Agreed, I can never understand why Y-plan is popular. On W-plan I've not found CH being delayed until HW is satisfied to be a problem. The mid-position valve is more expensive and less reliable than an either/or valve. And if weather compensation is used it must be either/or to ensure boiler flow temperature high enough tho heat the HW cylinder.

Have you hit an issue, yet with a lack of HW and existing 170 litre tank?
Or has someone placed this idea in your head that your tank needs upgrading in size?

Naturally. when you have extra people staying you may wish or need to run the 'HW on time' for longer than when no guests? My programmer timer has 1 hour boost button that I would use for that.

Family of 4 in our house- I wouldn't say we're frugal with hot water and we have a 200l cylinder. Unvented, working off very good mains water pressure, and does us absolutely fine with timer set to heat for an hour or so twice a day. 170l sounds fine to me for 2. We were coping with a 100l cylinder which did run out occasionally, before the upgrade to unvented and got the new 200l one.
