Hi,
Citreon xsara picasso 2.0 hdi diesel desire - 2005 - 90,680 miles

I have had problems for about 2-3 months where the car cuts out, this can be whilst it is stood in idle mode or when it is driving at up to 60 mph. There is no warning and no apparent loss of power - it just comes to a total stop with the battery and oil light coming on, just like when a car stalls. Then it has to stand for a few minutes before it will start again, once it does start the engine fault light shows. It was initially diagnosed as an EGR valve fault, this was replaced and less than 24 he's later same problem. EGR valve was changed again, also the solenoid valve had been damaged so that was also replaced, then whilst garage had car following the test drive after repairs it would not start. The garage took it to a Bosch garage for diagnostics resetting of its parameters. They said it had high air pressure and replaced the air flow meter sensor at over £220. Less than 4 hours after getting it back when it had been parked it would not start, went back to garage. They diagnosed a fault with the air pressure and said that the inlet and outlet air hoses on the engine were loose, these were tightened at a cost of £72 this time. 24 hrs later same problem only back to cutting out. Went back again, this time they said fuel pump was no good, they had it for 10 days, insisted only original citreon part would fit and charged £317. It had only gone less than 20 miles and from cold it would not start again! Went back to garage for diagnosis again, said its parameters were not right, air pressure in engine too high, fuel pressure too low - all the original faults. They now saying final piece of puzzle which hasn't been replaced is the fuel regulator valve which will cost approx £217. I am reaching the end of my tether the original fault was quoted at £166 and it cost £800 so far and I'm back at square one. I am terrified when driving it cos it just loses everything power, so steering and brakes. I have lost all faith in the Bosch garage it has been at, they don't seem to have any ideas what wrong with it, they clutching at straws and I don't even get the courtesy of a call to tell me what wrong and how much it going to cost, this information is given when I collect it and work has been done so I have no say in matter! If anyone can offer any suggestions I would be very grateful.

When this garage you will have a new car. At the moment they seem to be guessing.

I would honestly be inclined to go back to them and ask them what else is wrong and if they don't fix it tell them you are taking to a main agents and having a full diagnostic check done.

There is no reason why you should be paying out for this garages incompetence! If it is still faulty after a new part is fitted then that part should not have been changed in the first place and the original part replaced.

All this place is doing is throwing parts at it until they happen across the faulty part and at your expense.

I never fixed cars for a living. My line was gas boilers and if I continually fitted parts and the fault remained I would be well and truly embarrassed.

I always worked on a no fix no charge basis and if I did misdiagnose the faulty component it was taken out and became part of my own van stock. The secret of this being a rare occurrence was to properly diagnose fault to start with.

Did they ever tell you if a full diagnostic scan was ever carried out and what codes were thrown up?

I agree, I don't know how they get away with this policy. I was a TV engineer for about 50 years and if a fault recurred after I had repaired it I wouldn't have dreamed of charging them again and they probably wouldn't have paid if I had.

Modern cars are difficult to understand so they need someone who knows what they are doing and I think in this case that would be a good diesel specialist rather than a garage, they are usually cheaper too.

I agree with the other posters on here. I would be livid.

It actually sounds like (too much) water in the diesel filter. Which would've been the very first item I'd have checked/changed.

How do you check too much water in the diesel filter? Sorry if I sound a bit stupid but I have no idea.

I have found on Google the Bosch service code of conduct where their garages ring and gain authorisation before proceeding with any work, which this centre of there's has never done. So I intend to contact Bosch service centre HQ on Monday and find out appropriate channels to register a complain in line with their code of conduct.

The original garage who replaced the EGR valve is having car back tomorrow they are happy to replace the EGR valve under warranty and are sending the EGR valve back to the manufacturers for reporting. Like me they are 99% certain it not the problem. They have always been very fair with me and have never ripped me off. They are also angry because they took it to the Bosch garage thinking they would solve problem.

I doubt very much that it's the EGR valve causing an issue

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculate. It basically sends back the exhaust into the cylinders for a "reburn" to lower emissions.

Sorry if you already knew that !

EGR valves do get clogged but that usually means a drop in performance ie: more turbo lag.

As for fuel/diesel filters.. Well.. You shouldn't have water in them full stop but there IS water in fuel and as oil (fuel) floats on water there is a trap on the bottom of the filter.

Easiest way is to change the filter as they are dirt cheap anyway.

I bought the car in 2009 and when it has been serviced I have never been told fuel filter had been changed, so I assume it hasn't. Only garage that mentioned it was the garage who did a major service on her this year who said they had not changed fuel filter cos they couldn't get housing off as it was damaged. When the EGR was replaced the first time and then showed faulty again, also showed low fuel pressure so garage started to look at fuel system starting with filter. The housing had been broken and superglued, hence the damage. They have replaced the housing and also fitted a new fuel filter about 3 weeks ago.

Easiest way is to change the filter as they are dirt cheap anyway.

If you don't mind me saying that is complete and utter bull
Why did they not ensure it was fixed before giving it back to you? As soon as a garage starts sending work out to someone else, they are looking for someone to blame.

I thought the fuel pump in the tank give trouble on those as does the main relay controlling it. Symptoms are as you describe.

They mad because, in all fairness, they were told the very same as me each time it has been 'repaired' that they claim they have had it on road test on and off for 2days ensuring it is fault free, starting from cold, stopping at temp and starting straight back, uphill as well as downhill! To be honest I don't believe them, when I have been in waiting to collect it their standard phrase to customers is 'we just want to road test test it for another day to ensure it OK' but u can't check cos trip is always zeroed when it comes back. But I cannot believe that it can fail within a couple of hours of my getting it back and not a blip on 2 days of supposed road testing!
